18. Prophet Sulayman (AS)

Sulayman (also spelled as Sulaiman) was the son of Prophet Daud. He was a Prophet and a messenger of Allah like his father and a Just Ruler. His ruled over the entire creations of Allah and could understand the language of animals.

Intelligence of Sulaiman son of Dawud

----------------------------------------

[21:78] And remember Dawud and Sulaiman, when they give judgment in the matter of the field into which the sheep of certain
people had strayed by night: We did witness their judgment.

Grapes which had grown and their bunches were spoiled by the sheep. Dawud (David) ruled that the owner of the grapes should keep the sheep. Sulayman (Solomon) said, `Not like this, O Prophet of Allah!' Dawud said, `How then' Sulayman said: `Give the grapes to the owner of the sheep and let him tend them until they grow back as they were, and give the sheep to the owner of the grapes and let him benefit from them until the grapes have grown back as they were. Then the grapes should be given back to their owner, and the sheep should be given back to their owner. ( IBN KATHIR)

Sulaiman made King & Prophet
----
----------------------------

[38:30] To Dawud We gave Sulaiman (for a son), how excellent in Our service! ever did he turn (to Us)!

[27:15] We gave (in the past) knowledge to Dawud and Sulaiman: and they both said: "Praise be to Allah, Who has favoured us above many of His servants who believe!"

dont forget to put the inheritance Ayat.

Sulaiman's court
-----------------

Sulaiman asks Allah for a great Kingdom.

[38:35] He said: "O my Lord! forgive me, and grant me a Kingdom which, (it may be), suits not another after me: for Thou are the Grantor of Bounties (without measure).

Sulaiman had control over every creature of earth including the Genie.

[38:36] Then We subjected the Wind to his power, to flow gently to his order, whithersoever he willed,

[38:37] As also the evil ones, (including) every kind of builder and diver,

[38:38] As also others bound together in fetters.

[38:39] "Such are Our Bounties: whether thou bestow them (on others) or withhold them, no account will be asked."

[38:40] And he enjoyed, indeed, a Near Approach to Us, and a beautiful Place of (final) Return.

[21:81] (It was Our power that made) the violent (unruly) wind flow (tamely) for Sulaiman, to his order, to the land which We had blessed: for We do know all things.

[34:12] And to Sulaiman (We made) the Wind (obedient): its early morning (stride) was a month's (journey), and its evening (stride) was a month's (journey); and We made a Font of molten brass to flow for him; and there were Jinns that worked in front of him, by the leave of his Lord, and if any of them turned aside from Our command, We made him taste of the Penalty of the Blazing Fire.

[34:13] They worked for him as he desired, (making) Arches, Images, Basins, as large as Reservoirs, and (cooking) Cauldrons fixed (in their places): "Work ye, Sons of Dawud, with thanks! but few of My servants are grateful!"

Sulaiman Misses the Salat (Prayer)
------------------------------------

[38:31] Behold, there were brought before him, at eventide, coursers of the highest breeding, and swift of foot;

[38:32] And he said, "Truly do I love the love of Good, with a view to the glory of my Lord," until (the sun) was hidden in the veil (of Night):

[38:33] "Bring them back to me." Then began he to pass his hand over (their) legs and their necks.

Sulaiman tested by Allah
--------------------------

[38:34] And We did try Sulaiman: We placed on his throne a body (without life): but he did turn (to Us in true devotion).

Sulaiman shows thanks to Allah
---------------------------------

[27:16] And Sulaiman was Dawud's heir. He said: "O ye people! we have been taught the speech of birds, and on us has been bestowed (a little) of all things: this is indeed Grace manifest (from Allah.)"

[27:17] And before Sulaiman were marshalled his hosts, of Jinns and men and birds, and they were all kept in order and ranks.

[27:18] At length, when they came to a (lowly) valley of ants, one of the ants said: "O ye ants, get into your habitations, lest Sulaiman and his hosts crush you (under foot) without knowing it."

[27:19] So he smiled, amused at its speech; and he said: "O my Lord! so order me that I may be grateful for Thy favours, which Thou hast bestowed on me and on my parents, and that I may work the righteousness that will please Thee: and admit me, by Thy Grace, to the ranks of Thy righteous Servants."

Sulaiman And The Queen OF Saba (Sheba)
--------------------------------------------

This a fascinating story of Prophet Sulaiman and the Queen of Saba. She was wise and steadfast, intelligent and strong-willed. The people of Saba used to worship the fire. Sulaiman was informed of them by one of the birds in his court. He immediately invited her to accept Islam and abandon her false faith.

Below is the story and the conversation between them before she accepted Sulaiman's Message of Islamic Monotheism.

[27:20] And he took a muster of the Birds; and he said: "Why is it I see not the Hoopoe? Or is he among the absentees?

[27:21] "I will certainly punish him with a severe penalty, or execute him, unless he bring me a clear reason (for absence)."

The hoopoe was an expert who used to show Sulayman where water was if he was out in open land and needed water. The hoopoe would look for water for him in the various strata of the earth, just as a man looks at things on the surface of the earth, and he would know just how far below the surface the water was. When the hoopoe showed him where the water was, Sulayman would command the Jinn to dig in that place until they brought water from the depths of the earth. One day Sulayman went to some open land and checked on the birds, but he could not see the hoopoe. (IBN-KATHIR)

[27:22] But the Hoopoe tarried not far: he (came up and) said: "I have compassed (territory) which thou hast not compassed, and I have come to thee from Saba with tidings true.

[27:23] "I found (there) a woman ruling over them and provided with every requisite; and she has a magnificent throne.

[27:24] "I found her and her people worshipping the sun besides Allah: Satan has made their deeds seem pleasing to their eyes, and has kept them away from the Path, so they receive no guidance,

[27:25] "(Kept them away from the Path) that they should not worship Allah, Who brings to light what is hidden in the heavens and the earth, and knows what ye hide and what ye reveal.

[27:26] "Allah! - there is no god but He! - Lord of the Throne supreme!"

Sulaiman sends Letter to Queen
---------------------------------

[27:27] (Sulaiman) said: "Soon shall we see whether thou hast told the truth or lied!

[27:28] "Go thou, with this letter of mine, and deliver it to them: then draw back from them, and (wait to) see what answer they return"...

[27:29] (The Queen) said: "Ye chiefs! here is - delivered to me - a letter worthy of respect.

[27:30] "It is from Sulaiman, and is (as follows): 'In the name of Allah, Most Gracious Most Merciful:

[27:31] "`Be ye not arrogant against me, but come to me in submission (to the true Religion).'"

[27:32] She said: "Ye chiefs! advise me in (this) my affair: no affair have I decided except in your presence."

[27:33] They said: "We are endued with strength, and given to vehement war: but the command is with thee; so consider what thou wilt command."

[27:34] She said: "Kings, when they enter a country, despoil it, and make the noblest of its people its meanest; thus do they behave.

Queen sends present to Sulaiman
-----------------------------------

[27:35] "But I am going to send him a present, and (wait) to see with what (answer) return (my) ambassadors."

[27:36] Now when (the embassy) came to Sulaiman, he said: "Will ye give me abundance in wealth? But that which Allah has given me is better than that which He has given you! Nay it is ye who rejoice in your gift!

[27:37] "Go back to them, and be sure we shall come to them with such hosts as they will never be able to meet: we shall expel them from there in disgrace, and they will feel humbled (indeed)."

Queen decided to visit Sulaiman
---------------------------------

[27:38] He said (to his own men): "Ye Chiefs! which of you can bring me her throne before they come to me in submission?"

[27:39] Said an 'Ifrit, of the Jinns: "I will bring it to thee before thou rise from thy council: indeed I have full strength for the purpose, and may be trusted."

[27:40] Said one who had knowledge of the Scripture: "I will bring it to thee within the twinkling of any eye!" Then when (Sulaiman) saw it placed firmly before him, he said: "This is by the grace of my Lord! to test me whether I am grateful or ungrateful! And if any is grateful, truly his gratitude is (a gain) for his own soul; but if any is ungrateful, truly my Lord is Free of All Needs, Supreme in Honour!"...

[27:41] He said: "Transform her throne out of all recognition by her: let us see whether she is guided (to the truth) or is one of those who receive no guidance."

[27:42] So when she arrived, she was asked, "Is this thy throne?" She said, "(It is) as though it were the very same; and knowledge was bestowed on us in advance of this, and we have submitted to Allah (in Islam)."

When Sulayman brought the throne of Bilqis before she and her people arrived, he issued orders that some of its features should be altered, so that he could test her and see whether she recognized it and how composed she would be when she saw it. Would she hasten to say either that it was her throne or that it was not So he said:

Sulaiman removed some of its adornments and parts. He issued orders that it should be changed, so whatever was red should be made yellow and vice versa, and whatever was green should be made red, so everything was altered. They added some things and took some things away. It was turned upside down and back to front, and some things were added and some things were taken away.

Her throne, which had been altered and disguised, with some things added and others taken away, was shown to her. She was wise and steadfast, intelligent and strong-willed. She did not hasten to say that this was her throne, because it was far away from her. Neither did she hasten to say that it was not her throne, when she saw that some things had been altered and changed. She said, (It is) as though it were the very same. ) This is the ultimate in intelligence and strong resolve. (IBN KATHIR)

[27:43] And he diverted her from the worship of others besides Allah: for she was (sprung) of a people that had no faith.

[27:44] She was asked to enter the lofty Palace: but when she saw it, she thought it was a lake of water, and she (tucked up her cloth), uncovering her legs. He said: "This is but a palace paved smooth with slabs of glass." She said: "O my Lord! I have indeed wronged my soul: I do (now) submit (in Islam), with Sulaiman, to the Lord of the Worlds."

Death of Sulaiman
-------------------

[34:14] Then, when We decreed (Sulaiman's) death, nothing showed them his death except a little worm of the earth, which kept
(slowly) gnawing away at his staff: so when he fell down, the Jinns saw plainly that if they had known the unseen, they would
not have tarried in the humiliating Penalty (of their Task).

Allah tells us how Sulayman, peace be upon him, died and how Allah concealed his death from the Jinn who were subjugated to him to do hard labor. He remained leaning on his stick, which was his staff, as Ibn `Abbas may Allah be pleased with him, When a creature of the earth, which was a kind of worm, ate through the stick, it became weak and fell to the ground. Then it became apparent that he had died a long time before. It also became clear to Jinn and men alike that the Jinn do not know the Unseen as they (the Jinn) used to imagine and tried to deceive people. (IBN-KATHIR)
