13. Prophet Shoaib (AS)

The people of Madyan were Arabs who lived in the country of Ma'an, part of which today is greater Syria. They were a greedy people who did not believe that Allah existed and led wicked lives. They gave short measure, praised their goods beyond their worth, and hid their defects. They lied to their customers, thereby cheating them.

Allah sent His Prophet Shoaib armed with many miracles. Shoaib preached to them, begging them to be mindful of Allah's favours and warning them of the consequences of their evil ways, but they only mocked him. Shoaib remained calm as he reminded them of his kinship to them and that what he was doing was not for his personal gain.

They seized the belongings of Shoaib and his followers, then drove them out of the city. The Messenger turned to his Lord for help, and his plea was answered. Allah sent down on them scorching heat, and they suffered terribly. On seeing a cloud gathering in the sky, they thought it would bring cool, refreshing rain, and rushed outside in the hope of enjoying the rainfall. Instead, the cloud burst, hurling thunderbolts and fire. They heard a thunderous sound from above, which caused the earth under their feet to tremble. The evil-doers perished in this state of horror.

From the Holy Quran :

[7:85] To the Madyan people We sent Shu'aib, one of their own brethren: he said: "O my people! worship Allah; ye have no other god but Him. Now hath come unto you a Clear (Sign) from your Lord! give just measure and weight, nor withhold from the people the things that are their due; and do no mischief on the earth after it has been set in order: that will be best for you, if ye have Faith.

[7:86] "And squat not on every road, breathing threats, hindering from the path of Allah those who believe in Him, and seeking in it something crooked; but remember how ye were little, and He gave you increase. And hold in your mind's eye what was the end of those who did mischief.

[26:177] Behold, Shu'aib said to them: "Will ye not fear (Allah)?

[26:178] "I am to you a Messenger worthy of all trust.

[26:179] "So fear Allah and obey me.

[26:180] "No reward do I ask of you for it: my reward is only from the Lord of the Worlds.

[26:181] "Give just measure, and cause no loss (to others by fraud).

[26:182] "And weigh with scales true and upright.

[26:183] "And withhold not things justly due to men, nor do evil in the land, working mischief.

[26:184] "And fear Him Who created you and (Who created) the generations before (you)."

[26:185] They said: "Thou art only one of those bewitched!

[26:186] "Thou art no more than a mortal like us, and indeed we think thou art a liar!

[26:187] "Now cause a piece of the sky to fall on us, if thou art truthful!"

[26:188] He (Shoaib) said: "My Lord knows best what ye do."

[7:87] "And if there is a party among you who believes in the Message with which I have been sent, and a party which does not believe, hold yourselves in patience until Allah doth decide between us: for He is the best to decide.

[7:88] The leaders, the arrogant party among his people, said: "O Shu'aib! we shall certainly drive thee out of our city - (thee) and those who believe with thee - or else ye (thou and they) shall have to return to our ways and religion." He said: "What! even though we do detest (them)?

[7:89] "We should indeed invent a lie against Allah, if we returned to your ways after Allah hath rescued us therefrom; nor could we by any manner of means return thereto unless it be as in the will and plan of Allah, our Lord. Our Lord can reach out to the utmost recesses of things by His knowledge. In Allah is our trust. Our Lord! decide thou between us and our people in truth, for thou art the best to decide."

[7:90] The leaders, the Unbelievers among his people, said: "If ye follow Shu'aib, be sure then ye are ruined!"

[7:91] But the earthquake took them unawares, and they lay prostrate in their homes before the morning!

[7:92] The men who rejected Shu'aib became as if they had never been in the homes where they had flourished: the men who rejected Shu'aib, it was they who were ruined!

[7:93] So Shu'aib left them saying: "O my people! I did indeed convey to you the Messages for which I was sent by my Lord: I gave you good counsel, but how shall I lament over a people who refuse to believe!"

[7:94] Whenever We sent a prophet to a town, We took up its people in suffering and adversity, in order that they might learn humility.

[7:95] Then We changed their suffering into prosperity, until they grew and multiplied, and began to say: "Our fathers (too) were touched by suffering and affluence"... Behold! We called them to account of a sudden, while they realised not (their peril).

[7:96] If the people of the towns had but believed and feared Allah, We should indeed have opened out to them (all kinds of) blessings from heaven and earth; but they rejected (the truth), and We brought them to book for their misdeeds.

[7:97] Did the people of the towns feel secure against the coming of Our wrath by night while they were asleep?

[7:98] Or else did they feel secure against its coming in broad daylight while they played about (carefree)?

[7:99] Did they then feel secure against the Plan of Allah? But no one can feel secure from the Plan of Allah, except those (doomed) to ruin!

[26:190] Verily in that is a Sign: but most of them do not believe.

[26:191] And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful.

[26:192] Verily this is a Revelation from the Lord of the worlds:

[26:193] With it came down the Spirit of Faith and Truth,

[26:194] To thy heart and mind, that thou mayest admonish

[26:195] In the perspicuous Arabic tongue.
