14. Prophet Musa (AS)

The most talked about Prophet in the Quran. In length does Allah narrate his story in various places in the quran as a reminder to future generations.

Prophet Musa (Moses) was born at a time when the Israelites were driven out of there land and were enslaved by the Egyptian Pharoahs who inflicted worst penalties . Before the birth of Musa (Moses), the Egyptian Pharoah had a dream.

( Ibn Abbas narrated ) "Pharaoh saw in his vision a fire which came from Jerusalem and burned the houses of the Egyptians, and all Copts, and did not do harm to the children of Israel. When he woke up, he was horrified. He then gathered his priests and magicians and asked them about this vision. They said: 'This means a boy will be born of them and the Egyptian people will perish at his hands.' That is why Pharaoh commanded that all male children of the children of Israel be killed." ( Ibn Kathir)

However Allah saved Musa (Moses) miraculously from death during childhood and he grew-up in the household of the Pharoah himself.

Musa (Moses) was a great Prophet, Statesman, military general, and Law maker. He managed to rescue a tribe that was destined for slavery and punishment.

Narrated By Ibn Umar : The Prophet said, "I saw Musa (Moses), Jesus and Abraham (on the night of my Ascension to the heavens). Jesus was of red complexion, curly hair and a broad chest. Musa (Moses) was of brown complexion, straight hair and tall stature as if he was from the people of Az-Zutt." (Shahih Bukhari Vol 4, Book 55. Prophets. Hadith 648.)

Below is the story in detail from the Holy Quran:-

[28:3] We rehearse to thee some of the story of Musa (Moses) and Pharaoh in Truth, for people who believe.

[40:23] Of old We sent Musa (Moses), with Our Signs and an authority manifest,

[40:24] To Pharaoh, Haman, and Qarun; but they called (him)" a sorcerer telling lies!"...

[28:4] Truly Pharaoh elated himself in the land and broke up its people into sections, depressing a small group among them: their sons he slew, but he kept alive their females: for he was indeed a maker of mischief.

[28:5] And We wished to be Gracious to those who were being depressed in the land, to make them leaders (in Faith) and make them heirs,

[28:6] To establish a firm place for them in the land, and to show Pharaoh, Haman, and their hosts, at their hands, the very things against which they were taking precautions.

Musa (Moses) is Born

[28:7] So We sent this inspiration to the mother of Musa (Moses): "Suckle (thy child), but when thou hast fears about him, cast him into the river, but fear not nor grieve: for We shall restore him to thee, and We shall make him one of Our Apostles."

[20:39] "'Throw (the child) into the chest, and throw (the chest) into the river: the river will cast him up on the bank, and he will be taken up by one who is an enemy to Me and an enemy to him': But I cast (the garment of) love over thee from Me: and (this) in order that thou mayest be reared under Mine eye.

[28:8] Then the people of Pharaoh picked him up (from the river): (It was intended) that (Musa (Moses)) should be to them an adversary and a cause of sorrow: for Pharaoh and Haman and (all) their hosts were men of sin.

[28:9] The wife of Pharaoh said: "(Here is) joy of the eye, for me and for thee: slay him not. It may be that he will be use to us, or we may adopt him as a son." And they perceived not (what they were doing)!

[28:10] But there came to be a void in the heart of the mother of Musa (Moses): She was going almost to disclose his (case), had We not strengthened her heart (with faith), so that she might remain a (firm) believer.

[28:11] And she said to the sister of (Musa (Moses)), "Follow him" so she (the sister) watched him in the character of a stranger. And they knew not.

[28:12] And we ordained that he refused suck at first, until (His sister came up and) said: "Shall I point out to you the people of a house that will nourish and bring him up for you and be sincerely attached to him?"...

[28:13] Thus did We restore him to his mother, that her eye might be comforted, that she might not grieve, and that she might know that the promise of Allah is true: but most of them do not understand.

Musa (Moses) kills a Person Accidentally

[28:14] When he reached full age, and was firmly established (in life), We bestowed on him wisdom and knowledge: for thus do We reward those who do good.

[28:15] And he entered the city at a time when its people were not watching: and he found there two men fighting,- one of his own religion, and the other, of his foes. Now the man of his own religion appealed to him against his foe, and Musa (Moses) struck him with his fist and made an end of him. He said: "This is a work of Evil (Satan): for he is an enemy that manifestly misleads!"

[28:16] He prayed: "O my Lord! I have indeed wronged my soul! Do Thou then forgive me!" So (Allah) forgave him: for He is the Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

[28:17] He said: "O my Lord! For that Thou hast bestowed Thy Grace on me, never shall I be a help to those who sin!"

[28:18] So he saw the morning in the city, looking about, in a state of fear, when behold, the man who had, the day before, sought his help called aloud for his help (again). Musa (Moses) said to him: "Thou art truly, it is clear, a quarrelsome fellow!"

[28:19] Then, when he decided to lay hold of the man who was an enemy to both of them, that man said: "O Musa (Moses)! Is it thy intention to slay me as thou slewest a man yesterday? Thy intention is none other than to become a powerful violent man in the land, and not to be one who sets things right!"

[28:20] And there came a man, running, from the furthest end of the City. He said: "O Musa (Moses)! the Chiefs are taking counsel together about thee, to slay thee: so get thee away, for I do give thee sincere advice."

[28:21] He therefore got away therefrom, looking about, in a state of fear. He prayed "O my Lord! save me from people given to wrong-doing."

Musa (Moses) leaves Egypt for Madyan

[28:22] Then, when he turned his face towards (the land of) Madyan, he said: "I do hope that my Lord will show me the smooth and straight Path."

[28:23] And when he arrived at the watering (place) in Madyan, he found there a group of men watering (their flocks), and besides them he found two women who were keeping back (their flocks). He said: "What is the matter with you?" They said: "We cannot water (our flocks) until the shepherds take back (their flocks): And our father is a very old man."

[28:24] So he watered (their flocks) for them; then he turned back to the shade, and said:"O my Lord! truly am I in (desperate) need of any good that Thou dost send me!"

[28:25] Afterwards one of the (damsels) came (back) to him, walking bashfully. She said: "My father invites thee that he may reward thee for having watered (our flocks) for us." So when he came to him and narrated the story, he said: "Fear thou not: (well) hast thou escaped from unjust people."

[28:26] Said one of the (damsels): "O my (dear) father! engage him on wages: truly the best of men for thee to employ is the (man) who is strong and trusty"....

[28:27] He said: "I intend to wed one of these my daughters to thee, on condition that thou serve me for eight years; but if thou complete ten years, it will be (grace) from thee. But I intend not to place thee under a difficulty: thou wilt find me, indeed, if Allah wills, one of the righteous."

[28:28] He said: "Be that (the agreement) between me and thee: whichever of the two terms I fulfil, let there be no ill-will to me. Be Allah a witness to what we say."

Musa (Moses) First Conversation with Allah on Mount Sinai

[28:29] Now when Musa (Moses) had fulfilled the term, and was travelling with his family, he perceived a fire in the direction of Mount Tur. He said to his family: "Tarry ye; I perceive a fire; I hope to bring you from there some information, or a burning firebrand, that ye may warm yourselves."

[28:30] But when he came to the (fire), a voice was heard from the right bank of the valley, from a tree in hallowed ground: O Musa (Moses)! Verily I am Allah, the Lord of the Worlds....

[20:12] "Verily I am thy Lord! therefore (in My presence) put off thy shoes: thou art in the sacred valley Tuwa.

[20:13] "I have chosen thee: listen, then, to the inspiration (sent to thee).

[20:14] "Verily, I am Allah. There is no god but I: So serve thou Me (only), and establish regular prayer for celebrating My praise.

[20:15] "Verily the Hour is coming - My design is to keep it hidden - for every soul to receive its reward by the measure of its Endeavour.

[20:16] "Therefore let not such as believe not therein but follow their own lusts, divert thee therefrom, lest thou perish!"..

[20:17] "And what is that in the right hand, O Musa (Moses)?"

[20:18] He said, "It is my rod: on it I lean; with it I beat down fodder for my flocks; and in it I find other uses."

[28:31] "Now do thou throw thy rod!" but when he saw it moving (of its own accord) as if it had been a snake, he turned back in retreat, and retraced not his steps: O Musa (Moses)!" (It was said), "Draw near, and fear not: for thou art of those who are secure.

[28:32] "Move thy hand into thy bosom, and it will come forth white without stain (or harm), and draw thy hand close to thy side (to guard) against fear. Those are the two credentials from thy Lord to Pharaoh and his Chiefs: for truly they are a people rebellious and wicked."

[28:33] He said: "O my Lord! I have slain a man among them, and I fear lest they slay me.

[28:34] "And my brother Harun - He is more eloquent in speech than I: so send him with me as a helper, to confirm (and strengthen) me: for I fear that they may accuse me of falsehood."

[28:35] He said: "We will certainly strengthen thy arm through thy brother, and invest you both with authority, so they shall not be able to touch you: with Our Sign shall ye triumph,- you two as well as those who follow you."

[20:43] "Go, both of you, to Pharaoh, for he has indeed transgressed all bounds;

[20:44] "But speak to him mildly; perchance he may take warning or fear (Allah)."

Musa (Moses) And Pharoah

[7:104] Musa (Moses) said: "O Pharaoh! I am an Apostle from the Lord of the worlds,-

[7:105] One for whom it is right to say nothing but truth about Allah. Now have I come unto you (people), from your Lord, with a clear (Sign): So let the Children of Israel depart along with me."

[26:18] (Pharaoh) said: "Did we not cherish thee as a child among us, and didst thou not stay in our midst many years of thy life?

[26:19] "And thou didst a deed of thine which (thou knowest) thou didst, and thou art an ungrateful (wretch)!"

[26:20] Musa (Moses) said: "I did it then, when I was in error.

[26:21] "So I fled from you (all) when I feared you; but my Lord has (since) invested me with judgment (and wisdom) and appointed me as one of the apostles.

[26:22] "And this is the favour with which thou dost reproach me,- that thou hast enslaved the Children of Israel!"

[26:23] Pharaoh said: "And what is the 'Lord and Cherisher of the worlds'?"

[26:24] (Musa (Moses)) said: "The Lord and Cherisher of the heavens and the earth, and all between,- if ye want to be quite sure."

[26:25] (Pharaoh) said to those around: "Did ye not listen (to what he says)?"

[26:26] (Musa (Moses)) said: "Your Lord and the Lord of your fathers from the beginning!"

[26:27] (Pharaoh) said: "Truly your apostle who has been sent to you is a veritable madman!"

[26:28] (Musa (Moses)) said: "Lord of the East and the West, and all between! if ye only had sense!"

[26:29] (Pharaoh) said: "If thou dost put forward any god other than me, I will certainly put thee in prison!"

[26:30] (Musa (Moses)) said: "Even if I showed you something clear (and) convincing?"

[7:106] (Pharaoh) said: "If indeed thou hast come with a Sign, show it forth,- if thou tellest the truth."

[7:107] Then (Musa (Moses) threw his rod, and behold! it was a serpent, plain (for all to see)!

[7:108] And he drew out his hand, and behold! it was white to all beholders!

[7:109] Said the Chiefs of the people of Pharaoh: "This is indeed a sorcerer well- versed.

[7:110] "His plan is to get you out of your land: then what is it ye counsel?"

[28:37] Musa (Moses) said: "My Lord knows best who it is that comes with guidance from Him and whose end will be best in the Hereafter: certain it is that the wrong-doers will not prosper."

[28:38] Pharaoh said: "O Chiefs! no god do I know for you but myself: therefore, O Haman! light me a (kiln to bake bricks) out of clay, and build me a lofty palace, that I may mount up to the god of Musa (Moses): but as far as I am concerned, I think (Musa) is a liar!" (also in 40:36-37)

[7:111] They said: "Keep him and his brother in suspense (for a while); and send to the cities men to collect-

[7:112] And bring up to thee all (our) sorcerers well-versed."

[7:113] So there came the sorcerers to Pharaoh: They said, "of course we shall have a (suitable) reward if we win!"

[7:114] He said: "Yea, (and more),- for ye shall in that case be (raised to posts) nearest (to my person)."

[7:115] They said: "O Musa (Moses)! wilt thou throw (first), or shall we have the (first) throw?"

[7:116] Said Musa (Moses): "Throw ye (first)." So when they threw, they bewitched the eyes of the people, and struck terror into them: for they showed a great (feat of) magic.

[7:117] We put it into Musa (Moses)'s mind by inspiration: "Throw (now) thy rod":and behold! it swallows up straight away all the falsehoods which they fake!

[7:118] Thus truth was confirmed, and all that they did was made of no effect.

[7:119] So the (great ones) were vanquished there and then, and were made to look small.

[7:120] But the sorcerers fell down prostrate in adoration.

[7:121] Saying: "We believe in the Lord of the Worlds,-

[7:122] "The Lord of Musa (Moses) and Aaron."

[7:123] Said Pharaoh: "Believe ye in Him before I give you permission? Surely this is a trick which ye have planned in the city to drive out its people: but soon shall ye know (the consequences).

[7:124] "Be sure I will cut off your hands and your feet on apposite sides, and I will cause you all to die on the cross."

[7:125] They said: "For us, We are but sent back unto our Lord:

[7:126] "But thou dost wreak thy vengeance on us simply because we believed in the Signs of our Lord when they reached us! Our Lord! pour out on us patience and constancy, and take our souls unto thee as Muslims (who bow to thy will)!

[7:127] Said the chiefs of Pharaoh's people: "Wilt thou leave Musa (Moses) and his people, to spread mischief in the land, and to abandon thee and thy gods?" He said: "Their male children will we slay; (only) their females will we save alive; and we have over them (power) irresistible."

[40:26] Said Pharaoh: "Leave me to slay Musa (Moses); and let him call on his Lord! What I fear is lest he should change your religion, or lest he should cause mischief to appear in the land!"

[40:27] Musa (Moses) said: "I have indeed called upon my Lord and your Lord (for protection) from every arrogant one who believes not in the Day of Account!"

[40:28] A believer, a man from among the people of Pharaoh, who had concealed his faith, said: "Will ye slay a man because he says, 'My Lord is Allah.?- when he has indeed come to you with Clear (Signs) from your Lord? and if he be a liar, on him is (the sin of) his lie: but, if he is telling the Truth, then will fall on you something of the (calamity) of which he warns you: Truly Allah guides not one who transgresses and lies!

[40:29] "O my People! Yours is the dominion this day: Ye have the upper hand in the land: but who will help us from the Punishment of Allah, should it befall us?" Pharaoh said: "I but point out to you that which I see (myself); Nor do I guide you but to the Path of Right!"

[40:30] Then said the man who believed: "O my people! Truly I do fear for you something like the Day (of disaster) of the Confederates (in sin)!-

[40:31] "Something like the fate of the People of Noah, the 'Ad, and the Thamud, and those who came after them: but Allah never wishes injustice to his Servants.

[40:32] "And O my people! I fear for you a Day when there will be Mutual calling (and wailing),-

[40:33] "A Day when ye shall turn your backs and flee: No defender shall ye have from Allah. Any whom Allah leaves to stray, there is none to guide...

[7:128] Said Musa (Moses) to his people: "Pray for help from Allah, and (wait) in patience and constancy: for the earth is Allah.s, to give as a heritage to such of His servants as He pleaseth; and the end is (best) for the righteous.

[7:129] They said: "We have had (nothing but) trouble, both before and after thou camest to us." He said: "It may be that your Lord will destroy your enemy and make you inheritors in the earth; that so He may try you by your deeds."

[10:83] But none believed in Musa (Moses) except some children of his people, because of the fear of Pharaoh and his chiefs, lest they should persecute them; and certainly Pharaoh was mighty on the earth and one who transgressed all bounds.

[10:84] Musa (Moses) said: "O my people! If ye do (really) believe in Allah, then in Him put your trust if ye submit (your will to His)."

[10:85] They said: "In Allah do we put out trust. Our Lord! make us not a trial for those who practise oppression;

[10:86] "And deliver us by Thy Mercy from those who reject (Thee)."

Egyptians Punished with Calamaties

[7:130] We punished the people of Pharaoh with years (of droughts) and shortness of crops; that they might receive admonition.

[7:131] But when good (times) came, they said, "This is due to us;" When gripped by calamity, they ascribed it to evil omens connected with Musa (Moses) and those with him! Behold! in truth the omens of evil are theirs in Allah.s sight, but most of them do not understand!

[7:132] They said (to Musa (Moses)): "Whatever be the Signs thou bringest, to work therewith thy sorcery on us, we shall never believe in thee.

[7:133] So We sent (plagues) on them: Wholesale death, Locusts, Lice, Frogs, And Blood: Signs openly self-explained: but they were steeped in arrogance,- a people given to sin.

[7:134] Every time the penalty fell on them, they said: "O Musa (Moses)! on your behalf call on thy Lord in virtue of his promise to thee: If thou wilt remove the penalty from us, we shall truly believe in thee, and we shall send away the Children of Israel with thee."

[7:135] But every time We removed the penalty from them according to a fixed term which they had to fulfil,- Behold! they broke their word!

Musa (Moses) moves from Egypt crossing the Sea

[20:77] We sent an inspiration to Musa (Moses): "Travel by night with My servants, and strike a dry path for them through the
sea, without fear of being overtaken (by Pharaoh) and without (any other) fear."

[26:60] So they (Pharoah & his army) pursued them at sunrise.

[26:61] And when the two bodies saw each other, the people of Musa (Moses) said: "We are sure to be overtaken."

[26:62] (Musa) said: "By no means! my Lord is with me! Soon will He guide me!"

[26:63] Then We told Musa (Moses) by inspiration: "Strike the sea with thy rod." So it divided, and each separate part became
like the huge, firm mass of a mountain.

[26:64] And We made the other party approach thither.

[10:90] We took the Children of Israel across the sea: Pharaoh and his hosts followed them in insolence and spite. At length, when overwhelmed with the flood, he said: "I believe that there is no god except Him Whom the Children of Israel believe in:I am of those who submit (to Allah in Islam)."

[10:91] (It was said to him): "Ah now!- But a little while before, wast thou in rebellion!- and thou didst mischief (and violence)!

[10:92] "This day shall We save thee in the body, that thou mayest be a sign to those who come after thee! but verily, many
among mankind are heedless of Our Signs!"

[26:67] Verily in this is a Sign: but most of them do not believe.

[20:79] Pharaoh led his people astray instead of leading them aright.

[7:136] So We exacted retribution from them: We drowned them in the sea, because they rejected Our Signs and failed to take warning from them.

[28:39] And he was arrogant and insolent in the land, beyond reason,- He and his hosts: they thought that they would not have to return to Us!

[28:40] So We seized him and his hosts, and We flung them into the sea: Now behold what was the end of those who did wrong!

[28:41] And we made them (but) leaders inviting to the Fire; and on the Day of Judgment no help shall they find.

[28:42] in this world We made a curse to follow them and on the Day of Judgment they will be among the loathed (and despised).

[7:137] And We made a people, considered weak (and of no account), inheritors of lands in both east and west, - lands whereon We sent down Our blessings. The fair promise of thy Lord was fulfilled for the Children of Israel, because they had patience and constancy, and We levelled to the ground the great works and fine buildings which Pharaoh and his people erected (with such pride).

Children of Israel ask Musa (Moses) to make him Idol God

[7:138] We took the Children of Israel (with safety) across the sea. They came upon a people devoted entirely to some idols they had. They said: "O Musa (Moses)! fashion for us a god like unto the gods they have." He said: "Surely ye are a people without knowledge.

[7:139] "As to these folk,- the cult they are in is (but) a fragment of a ruin, and vain is the (worship) which they practise."

[7:140] He said: "Shall I seek for you a god other than the (true) Allah, when it is Allah Who hath endowed you with gifts above the nations?"

Musa (Moses) gets the commandments

Upon reaching Mount Sinai, Musa (Moses) halted and asked his people to wait down while he climbed the mountain to the same place where he received his 1st command from Allah.

[2:63] And remember We took your covenant and We raised above you (The towering height) of Mount (Sinai) : (Saying): "Hold firmly to what We have given you and bring (ever) to remembrance what is therein: Perchance ye may fear Allah."

[7:142] We appointed for Musa (Moses) thirty nights, and completed (the period) with ten (more): thus was completed the term (of communion) with his Lord, forty nights. And Musa (Moses) had charged his brother Aaron (before he went up): "Act for me amongst my people: Do right, and follow not the way of those who do mischief."

[7:143] When Musa (Moses) came to the place appointed by Us, and his Lord addressed him, He said: "O my Lord! show (Thyself) to me, that I may look upon thee." Allah said: "By no means canst thou see Me (direct); But look upon the mount; if it abide in its place, then shalt thou see Me." When his Lord manifested His glory on the Mount, He made it as dust. And Musa (Moses) fell down in a swoon. When he recovered his senses he said: "Glory be to Thee! to Thee I turn in repentance, and I am the first to believe."

[7:144] (Allah) said: "O Musa (Moses)! I have chosen thee above (other) men, by the mission I (have given thee) and the words I (have spoken to thee): take then the (revelation) which I give thee, and be of those who give thanks."

[7:145] And We ordained laws for him in the tablets in all matters, both commanding and explaining all things, (and said): "Take and hold these with firmness, and enjoin thy people to hold fast by the best in the precepts: soon shall I show you the homes of the wicked,- (How they lie desolate)."

[7:146] Those who behave arrogantly on the earth in defiance of right - them will I turn away from My signs: Even if they see all the signs, they will not believe in them; and if they see the way of right conduct, they will not adopt it as the way; but if they see the way of error, that is the way they will adopt. For they have rejected our signs, and failed to take warning from them.

[7:147] Those who reject Our signs and the meeting in the Hereafter,- vain are their deeds: Can they expect to be rewarded except as they have wrought?

The worshipping of the Calf

[7:148] The people of Musa (Moses) made, in his absence, out of their ornaments, the image of calf, (for worship): it seemed to low: did they not see that it could neither speak to them, nor show them the way? They took it for worship and they did wrong.

[20:83] (When Musa (Moses) was up on the Mount, Allah said:) "What made thee hasten in advance of thy people, O Musa (Moses)?"

[20:84] He replied: "Behold, they are close on my footsteps: I hastened to thee, O my Lord, to please thee."

[20:85] (Allah) said: "We have tested thy people in thy absence: the Samiri has led them astray."

[20:86] So Musa (Moses) returned to his people in a state of indignation and sorrow. He said: "O my people! did not your Lord make a handsome promise to you? Did then the promise seem to you long (in coming)? Or did ye desire that Wrath should descend from your Lord on you, and so ye broke your promise to me?"

[20:87] They said: "We broke not the promise to thee, as far as lay in our power: but we were made to carry the weight of the ornaments of the (whole) people, and we threw them (into the fire), and that was what the Samiri suggested.

[20:88] "Then he brought out (of the fire) before the (people) the image of a calf: It seemed to low: so they said: This is your god, and the god of Musa (Moses), but (Musa (Moses)) has forgotten!"

[20:89] Could they not see that it could not return them a word (for answer), and that it had no power either to harm them or to do them good?

[20:90] Aaron had already, before this said to them: "O my people! ye are being tested in this: for verily your Lord is (Allah) Most Gracious; so follow me and obey my command."

[20:91] They had said: "We will not abandon this cult, but we will devote ourselves to it until Musa (Moses) returns to us."

[20:92] (Musa) said: "O Harun! what kept thee back, when thou sawest them going wrong,

[20:93] "From following me? Didst thou then disobey my order?"

[20:94] (Harun) replied: "O son of my mother! Seize (me) not by my beard nor by (the hair of) my head! Truly I feared lest thou shouldst say, 'Thou has caused a division among the children of Israel, and thou didst not respect my word!'"

[20:95] (Musa) said: "What then is thy case, O Samiri?"

[20:96] He replied: "I saw what they saw not: so I took a handful (of dust) from the footprint of the Messenger, and threw it (into the calf): thus did my soul suggest to me."

[20:97] (Musa) said: "Get thee gone! but thy (punishment) in this life will be that thou wilt say, 'touch me not'; and moreover (for a future penalty) thou hast a promise that will not fail: Now look at thy god, of whom thou hast become a devoted worshipper: We will certainly (melt) it in a blazing fire and scatter it broadcast in the sea!"

[20:98] But the god of you all is the One Allah. there is no god but He: all things He comprehends in His knowledge.

[7:149] When they repented, and saw that they had erred, they said: "If our Lord have not mercy upon us and forgive us, we shall indeed be of those who perish."

[7:151] Musa (Moses) prayed: "O my Lord! forgive me and my brother! admit us to Thy mercy! for Thou art the Most Merciful of those who show mercy!"

[7:152] Those who took the calf (for worship) will indeed be overwhelmed with wrath from their Lord, and with shame in this life: thus do We recompense those who invent (falsehoods).

[7:153] But those who do wrong but repent thereafter and (truly) believe,- verily thy Lord is thereafter Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

[7:154] When the anger of Musa (Moses) was appeased, he took up the tablets: in the writing thereon was guidance and Mercy for such as fear their Lord.

Musa (Moses) People ask him to show Allah

[2:55] And remember ye said: "O Musa (Moses)! We shall never believe in thee until we see Allah manifestly," but ye were dazed with thunder and lighting even as ye looked on.

[7:155] And Musa (Moses) chose seventy of his people for Our place of meeting: when they were seized with violent quaking, he prayed: "O my Lord! if it had been Thy will Thou couldst have destroyed, long before, both them and me: wouldst Thou destroy us for the deeds of the foolish ones among us? this is no more than Thy trial: by it Thou causest whom Thou wilt to stray, and Thou leadest whom Thou wilt into the right path. Thou art our Protector: so forgive us and give us Thy mercy; for Thou art the best of those who forgive.

Musa (Moses) prays for water

[2:60] And remember Musa (Moses) prayed for water for his people; We said: "Strike the rock with thy staff." Then gushed forth therefrom twelve springs. Each group knew its own place for water. So eat and drink of the sustenance provided by Allah, and do no evil nor mischief on the (face of the) earth.

[20:80] O ye Children of Israel! We delivered you from your enemy, and We made a Covenant with you on the right side of Mount (Sinai), and We sent down to you Manna and quails:

[20:81] (Saying): "Eat of the good things We have provided for your sustenance, but commit no excess therein, lest My Wrath should justly descend on you: and those on whom descends My Wrath do perish indeed!

[20:82] "But, without doubt, I am (also) He that forgives again and again, to those who repent, believe, and do right, who, in fine, are ready to receive true guidance."

[2:61] And remember you (Children Of Israil) said: "O Musa (Moses)! we cannot endure one kind of food (always); so beseech thy Lord for us to produce for us of what the earth groweth, -its pot-herbs, and cucumbers, Its garlic, lentils, and onions." He said: "Will ye exchange the better for the worse? Go ye down to any town, and ye shall find what ye want!" They were covered with humiliation and misery; they drew on themselves the wrath of Allah. This because they went on rejecting the Signs of Allah and slaying His Messengers without just cause. This because they rebelled and went on transgressing.

The Promised Land

[5:21] Remember Musa (Moses) said to his people: "O my people! Call in remembrance the favour of Allah unto you, when He produced prophets among you, made you kings, and gave you what He had not given to any other among the peoples.

[5:22] "O my people! Enter the holy land which Allah hath assigned unto you, and turn not back ignominiously, for then will ye be overthrown, to your own ruin."

[5:23] They said: "O Musa (Moses)! In this land are a people of exceeding strength: Never shall we enter it until they leave it: if (once) they leave, then shall we enter."

[5:24] (But) among (their) Allah.fearing men were two on whom Allah had bestowed His grace: They said: "Assault them at the (proper) Gate: when once ye are in, victory will be yours; But on Allah put your trust if ye have faith."

[5:25] They said: "O Musa (Moses)! while they remain there, never shall we be able to enter, to the end of time. Go thou, and thy Lord, and fight ye two, while we sit here (and watch)."

The Wandering for 40 Years

[5:26] He said: "O my Lord! I have power only over myself and my brother: so separate us from this rebellious people!"

[5:27] Allah said: "Therefore will the land be out of their reach for forty years: In distraction will they wander through the land: But sorrow thou not over these rebellious people.

During these 40 years Musa (Moses) approached death. Eventually the promised land was conquered by later generations.

Musa And The Heifer

This ia fabulous story about The Israelites involved in a dispute over the murder of a man. The quran relates the story how Allah helped them find the criminal.

Ibn Abi Hatim recorded `Ubaydah As-Salmani saying, "There was a man from among the Children of Israel who was impotent. He had substantial wealth, and only a nephew who would inherit from him. So his nephew killed him and moved his body at night, placing it at the doorstep of a certain man. The next morning, the nephew cried out for revenge, and the people took up their weapons and almost fought each other. The wise men among them said, `Why would you kill each other, while the Messenger of Allah is still among you' So they went to Musa and mentioned the matter to him.
(Tafseer Ibn-Kathir )

Musa invoked Allah for help and the following was revealed.

[2:67] And remember Musa (Moses) said to his people: "(Allah) commands that ye sacrifice a heifer." They said: "Makest thou a laughing-stock of us?" He said: "(Allah) save me from being an ignorant (fool)!"

[2:68] They said: "Beseech on our behalf Thy Lord to make plain to us what (heifer) it is!" He said; "He says: The heifer should be neither too old nor too young, but of middling age. Now do what ye are commanded!"

[2:69] They said: "Beseech on our behalf Thy Lord to make plain to us Her colour." He said: "He says: A fawn-coloured heifer, pure and rich in tone, the admiration of beholders!"

[2:70] They said: "Beseech on our behalf Thy Lord to make plain to us what she is: To us are all heifers alike: We wish indeed for guidance, if Allah wills."

[2:71] He said: "He says: A heifer not trained to till the soil or water the fields; sound and without blemish." They said: "Now hast thou brought the truth." Then they offered her in sacrifice, but not with good-will.

[2:72] Remember ye slew a man and fell into a dispute among yourselves as to the crime: But Allah was to bring forth what ye did hide.

[2:73] So We said: "Strike the (body) with a piece of the (heifer)." Thus Allah bringeth the dead to life and showeth you His Signs: Perchance ye may understand.

Musa (Moses) And Al-Khidr

Musa got up to deliver a speech before the Children of Israel and he was asked, "Who is the most learned person among the people'' Musa replied, "I am.'' Allah rebuked him because he did not refer the knowledge to Allah. So Allah revealed to him:"At the junction of the two seas there is a servant of Ours who is more learned than you.'' Musa asked, "O my Lord, how can I meet him'' Allah said, "Take a fish and put it in a vessel and then set out, and where you lose the fish, you will find him.'' ( Shahih Bukhari Vol 1, Book 3. Knowledge. Hadith 124.)

The story of Musa (Moses) And Al-Khidr depicts how a person can misjudge the right into wrong. It also portrays the inability of a human being to understand that what appears crooked/wrong is not always wrong/crooked.

[18:60] Behold, Musa (Moses) said to his attendant, "I will not give up until I reach the junction of the two seas or (until) I spend years and years in travel."

[18:61] But when they reached the Junction, they forgot (about) their Fish, which took its course through the sea (straight) as in a tunnel.

[18:62] When they had passed on (some distance), Musa (Moses) said to his attendant: "Bring us our early meal; truly we have suffered much fatigue at this (stage of) our journey."

[18:63] He replied: "Sawest thou (what happened) when we betook ourselves to the rock? I did indeed forget (about) the Fish: none but Satan made me forget to tell (you) about it: it took its course through the sea in a marvellous way!"

[18:64] Musa (Moses) said: "That was what we were seeking after:" So they went back on their footsteps, following (the path they had come).

[18:65] So they found one of Our servants, on whom We had bestowed Mercy from Ourselves and whom We had taught knowledge from Our own Presence.

[18:66] Musa (Moses) said to him: "May I follow thee, on the footing that thou teach me something of the (Higher) Truth which thou hast been taught?"

[18:67] (The other) said: "Verily thou wilt not be able to have patience with me!"

[18:68] "And how canst thou have patience about things about which thy understanding is not complete?"

[18:69] Musa (Moses) said: "Thou wilt find me, if Allah so will, (truly) patient: nor shall I disobey thee in aught."

[18:70] The other said: "If then thou wouldst follow me, ask me no questions about anything until I myself speak to thee concerning it."

[18:71] So they both proceeded: until, when they were in the boat, he scuttled it. Said Musa (Moses): "Hast thou scuttled it in order to drown those in it? Truly a strange thing hast thou done!"

[18:72] He answered: "Did I not tell thee that thou canst have no patience with me?"

[18:73] Musa (Moses) said: "Rebuke me not for forgetting, nor grieve me by raising difficulties in my case."

[18:74] Then they proceeded: until, when they met a young man, he slew him. Musa (Moses) said: "Hast thou slain an innocent person who had slain none? Truly a foul (unheard of) thing hast thou done!"

[18:75] He answered: "Did I not tell thee that thou canst have no patience with me?"

[18:76] (Musa (Moses)) said: "If ever I ask thee about anything after this, keep me not in thy company: then wouldst thou have received (full) excuse from my side."

[18:77] Then they proceeded: until, when they came to the inhabitants of a town, they asked them for food, but they refused them hospitality. They found there a wall on the point of falling down, but he set it up straight. (Musa (Moses)) said: "If thou hadst wished, surely thou couldst have exacted some recompense for it!"

[18:78] He answered: "This is the parting between me and thee: now will I tell thee the interpretation of (those things) over which thou wast unable to hold patience.

[18:79] "As for the boat, it belonged to certain men in dire want: they plied on the water: I but wished to render it unserviceable, for there was after them a certain king who seized on every boat by force.

[18:80] "As for the youth, his parents were people of Faith, and we feared that he would grieve them by obstinate rebellion and ingratitude (to Allah and man).

[18:81] "So we desired that their Lord would give them in exchange (a son) better in purity (of conduct) and closer in affection.

[18:82] "As for the wall, it belonged to two youths, orphans, in the Town; there was, beneath it, a buried treasure, to which they were entitled: their father had been a righteous man: So thy Lord desired that they should attain their age of full strength and get out their treasure - a mercy (and favour) from thy Lord. I did it not of my own accord. Such is the interpretation of (those things) over which thou wast unable to hold patience."

Musa (Moses) and Qaroon

Qaroon was the cousin of Musa. He was so  clever and tactical that the Pharoah made him in-charge of all his wealth. The wealth was so enormous that their keys would have been a burden to a group of strong men. His heart was filled with pride and disbelief. Eventually Allah made him perish while he was parading before the people together with all his wealth.

[28:76] Qarun was doubtless, of the people of Musa (Moses); but he acted insolently towards them: such were the treasures We had bestowed on him that their very keys would have been a burden to a body of strong men, behold, his people said to him: "Exult not, for Allah loveth not those who exult (in riches).

[28:77] "But seek, with the (wealth) which Allah has bestowed on thee, the Home of the Hereafter, nor forget thy portion in this world: but do thou good, as Allah has been good to thee, and seek not (occasions for) mischief in the land: for Allah loves not those who do mischief."

[28:78] He said: "This has been given to me because of a certain knowledge which I have." Did he not know that Allah had destroyed, before him, (whole) generations,- which were superior to him in strength and greater in the amount (of riches) they had collected? but the wicked are not called (immediately) to account for their sins.

[28:79] So he went forth among his people in the (pride of his wordly) glitter. Said those whose aim is the Life of this World: "Oh! that we had the like of what Qarun has got! for he is truly a lord of mighty good fortune!"

[28:80] But those who had been granted (true) knowledge said: "Alas for you! The reward of Allah (in the Hereafter) is best for those who believe and work righteousness: but this none shall attain, save those who steadfastly persevere (in good)."

[28:81] Then We caused the earth to swallow up him and his house; and he had not (the least little) party to help him against Allah, nor could he defend himself.

[28:82] And those who had envied his position the day before began to say on the morrow: "Ah! it is indeed Allah Who enlarges the provision or restricts it, to any of His servants He pleases! had it not been that Allah was gracious to us, He could have caused the earth to swallow us up! Ah! those who reject Allah will assuredly never prosper."
