6. Prophet Ibrahim (AS)

Quran [2:130] And who turns away from the religion of Ibrahim but such as debase their souls with folly? Him We chose and rendered pure in this world: and he will be in the Hereafter in the ranks of the Righteous.

[3:67] Ibrahim was not a Jew nor yet a Christian; but he was true in Faith, and bowed his will to Allah's (which is Islam), and he joined not gods with Allah.

Ibrahim (Abraham) (alaihi salaam) is an important prophet in Islam. He is the son of Azar and the father of the Prophet Ismail (Ishmael) & Ishaq (Isaac) & cousin of  Lut (Lot). His firstborn son Ismail (alaihisalaam) is considered the Father of the Arabs. Ibrahim is commonly termed in the Quran as Khalil Allah, or "Friend of Allah"

[4:125] Who can be better in religion than one who submits his whole self to Allah, does good, and follows the way of Ibrahim the true in faith? For Allah did take Ibrahim for a friend.

[22:78] And strive in His cause as ye ought to strive, (with sincerity and under discipline). He has chosen you, and has imposed no difficulties on you in religion; it is the cult of your father Ibrahim. It is He Who has named you Muslims, both before and in this (Revelation); that the Messenger may be a witness for you, and ye be witnesses for mankind! So establish regular Prayer, give regular Charity, and hold fast to Allah! He is your Protector, the best to protect and the Best to help!

Ibrahim (AS) was the architect of the 1st appointed sacred house of worship - The Kaaba, located in the city of Mecca, Saudi Arabia. All the customs that are still followed by Muslims today were originated by Abraham (AS)

[3:96] The first House (of worship) appointed for men was that at Bakka (another name of Mecca); full of blessing and of guidance for all kinds of beings

[22:26] Behold! We gave the site, to Ibrahim, of the (Sacred) House, (saying): "Associate not anything (in worship) with Me; and sanctify My House for those who compass it round, or stand up, or bow, or prostrate themselves (therein in prayer).

[22:27] "And proclaim the Pilgrimage among men; they will come to thee on foot and (mounted) on every kind of camel, lean on account of journeys through deep and distant mountain highways;

[22:28] "That they may witness the benefits (provided) for them, and celebrate the name of Allah, through the Days Appointed, over the cattle which He has provided for them (for sacrifice): then eat ye thereof and feed the distressed ones in want.

[22:29] "Then let them complete the rites prescribed for them, perform their vows, and (again) circumambulate the Ancient House."

[22:30] Such (is the Pilgrimage): whoever honours the sacred rites of Allah, for him it is good in the sight of his Lord. Lawful to you (for food in Pilgrimage) are cattle, except those mentioned to you (as exceptions): but shun the abomination of idols, and shun the word that is false,

At that time some people worshipped idols of stone and wood; others worshipped the planets, stars, sun and moon, still others worshipped their kings and rulers. Abraham was born into that atmosphere, into a typical family of that ancient time. The head of the family was not even an ordinary idolater, but was one who totally rejected Allah and who used to make the idols with his own hands.

Into that family Abraham was born, destined to stand against his own family, against the entire system of his community. In brief, he stood against all kinds of polytheism.

Ibrahim (AS) Discovers Allah:-

[6:75] So also did We show Abraham the power and the laws of the heavens and the earth, that he might (with understanding) have certitude.

[6:76] When the night covered him over, He saw a star: He said: "This is my Lord." But when it set, He said: "I love not those that set."

[6:77] When he saw the moon rising in splendour, he said: "This is my Lord." But when the moon set, He said: "unless my Lord guide me, I shall surely be among those who go astray."

[6:78] When he saw the sun rising in splendour, he said: "This is my Lord; this is the greatest (of all)." But when the sun set, he said: "O my people! I am indeed free from your (guilt) of giving partners to God.

[6:79] "For me, I have set my face, firmly and truly, towards Him Who created the heavens and the earth, and never shall I give partners to God."

Ibrahim (AS) Reasons with his People

[6:80] His people disputed with him. He said: "(Come) ye to dispute with me, about God, when He (Himself) hath guided me? I fear not (the beings) ye associate with God: Unless my Lord willeth, (nothing can happen). My Lord comprehendeth in His knowledge all things. Will ye not (yourselves) be admonished?

[6:81] "How should I fear (the beings) ye associate with God, when ye fear not to give partners to God without any warrant having been given to you? Which of (us) two parties hath more right to security? (tell me) if ye know.

[6:82] "It is those who believe and confuse not their beliefs with wrong - that are (truly) in security, for they are on (right) guidance."

[26:70] Behold, he said to his father and his people: "What worship ye?"

[26:71] They said: "We worship idols, and we remain constantly in attendance on them."

[26:72] He said: "Do they listen to you when ye call (on them),

[26:73] "Or do you good or harm?"

[26:74] They said: "Nay, but we found our fathers doing thus (what we do)."

[26:75] He said: "Do ye then see whom ye have been worshipping,

[26:76] "Ye and your fathers before you?

[26:77] "For they are enemies to me; not so the Lord and Cherisher of the Worlds;

[26:78] "Who created me, and it is He Who guides me;

[26:79] "Who gives me food and drink,

[26:80] "And when I am ill, it is He Who cures me;

[26:81] "Who will cause me to die, and then to live (again);

[26:82] "And Who, I hope, will forgive me my faults on the Day of Judgment...

[26:83] "O my Lord! bestow wisdom on me, and join me with the righteous;

[26:84] "Grant me honourable mention on the tongue of truth among the latest (generations);

[26:85] "Make me one of the inheritors of the Garden of Bliss;

[26:86] "Forgive my father, for that he is among those astray;

[26:87] "And let me not be in disgrace on the Day when (men) will be raised up;

[6:83] That was the reasoning about Us, which We gave to Abraham (to use) against his people: We raise whom We will, degree after degree: for thy Lord is full of wisdom and knowledge.

Ibrahim (AS) warns his people on rejecting the message

[29:18] "And if ye reject (the Message), so did generations before you: and the duty of the Messenger is only to preach publicly (and clearly)."

Ibrahim (AS) hacks the Idols :-

[21:57] "And by Allah, I have a plan for your idols - after ye go away and turn your backs"...

[37:91] Then did he turn to their gods and said, "Will ye not eat (Of the offerings before you)?.

[37:92] "What is the matter with you that ye speak not (intelligently)?"

[37:93] Then did he turn upon them, striking (them) with the right hand.

[21:58] So he broke them to pieces (all) but the biggest of them, that they might turn (and address themselves) to it.

[21:59] They said, "Who has done this to our gods? He must indeed be some man of impiety!"

[21:60] They said, "We heard a youth talk of them: he is called Ibrahim."

[21:61] They said, "Then bring him before the eyes of the people, that they may bear witness."

[21:62] They said, "Art thou the one that did this with our gods, O Ibrahim?"

[21:63] He said: "Nay, this was done by, this is their biggest one! Ask them, if they can speak intelligently!"

[21:64] So they turned to themselves and said, "Surely ye are the ones in the wrong!"

[21:65] Then were they confounded with shame: (they said) "Thou knowest full well that these (idols) do not speak!"

[21:66] (Ibrahim) said, "Do ye then worship, besides Allah, things that can neither be of any good to you nor do you harm?

[37:95] He said: "Worship ye that which ye have (Yourselves) carved?

[37:96] "But Allah has created you and your handiwork!"

[21:67] "Fie upon you, and upon the things that ye worship besides Allah! Have ye no sense?"...

[21:68] They said, "Burn him and protect your gods, if ye do (anything at all)!"

[37:97] They said, "Build him a furnace, and throw him into the blazing fire!"

[21:69] We said, "O Fire! be thou cool. and (a means of) safety for Ibrahim!"

[37:98] (This failing), they then sought a stratagem against him, but We made them the ones most humiliated!

[37:99] He said: "I will go to my Lord! He will surely guide me!

Ibrahim (AS) argues with his father

[19:42] Behold, he said to his father: "O my father! why worship that which heareth not, and seeth not and can profit thee nothing?

[19:43] "O my father! to me hath come knowledge which hath not reached thee: so follow me: I will guide thee to a Way that is even and straight.

[19:44] "O my father! serve not Satan: for Satan is a rebel against (Allah) Most Gracious.

[19:45] "O my father! I fear lest a Penalty afflict thee from (Allah) Most Gracious, so that thou become to Satan a friend."

[19:46] (The father) replied: "Dost thou hate my gods, O Ibrahim? If thou forbear not, I will indeed stone thee: now get away from me for a good long while!"

[19:47] Ibrahim said: "Peace be on thee: I will pray to my Lord for thy forgiveness: for He is to me Most Gracious.

[19:48] "And I will turn away from you (all) and from those whom ye invoke besides Allah: I will call on my Lord: perhaps, by my prayer to my Lord, I shall be not unblest."

[19:49] When he had turned away from them and from those whom they worshipped besides Allah, We bestowed on him Ishaq and Ya'qub, and each one of them We made a prophet.

Ibrahim (AS) prays for a son .

[37:100] "O my Lord! grant me a righteous (son)!"

[37:101] So We gave him the good news of a boy ready to suffer and forbear.

[11:69] There came Our Messengers to Ibrahim with glad tidings. They said, "Peace! "he answered, "Peace!" and hastened to entertain them with a roasted calf.

[11:70] But when he saw their hands went not towards the (meal), he felt some mistrust of them, and conceived a fear of them. They said:"Fear not: we have been sent against the people of Lut."

[11:71] And his wife was standing (there), and she laughed: but We gave her glad tidings of Ishaq, and after him, of Ya'qub.

[11:72] She said: "Alas for me! shall I bear a child, seeing I am an old woman, and my husband here is an old man? That would indeed be a wonderful thing!"

[11:73] They said: "Dost thou wonder at Allah's decree? The grace of Allah and His blessings on you, O ye people of the house! for He is indeed worthy of all praise, full of all glory!"

[14:39] "Praise be to Allah. Who hath granted unto me in old age Isma'il and Ishaq: for truly my Lord is He, the Hearer of Prayer!

Ibrahim (AS) confronts with the Pharoah Namrud.

[2:258] Hast thou not turned thy vision to one who disputed with Ibrahim about his Lord, because Allah had granted him power? Ibrahim said: "My Lord is He Who giveth life and death." He (Pharoah) said: "I give life and death." Said Ibrahim: "But it is Allah that causeth the sun to rise from the East do thou then cause him to rise from the West?" Thus was he confounded who (in arrogance) rejected Faith. Nor doth Allah give guidance to a people unjust.

Ibrahim (AS) asks Allah to show him a glimpse of Resurrection

[2:260] Behold! Ibrahim said: "My Lord! Show me how Thou givest life to the dead." He said: "Dost thou not then believe?" He said: "Yea! but to satisfy my own understanding." He said: "Take four birds; tame them to turn to thee; put a portion of them on every hill, and call to them; they will come to thee, (flying) with speed. Then know that Allah is Exalted in Power, Wise."

Ibrahim (AS) and Ismail (AS) Build the Kaaba ( 1st house of worship)

[2:124] And remember that Ibrahim was tried by his Lord with certain commands, which he fulfilled: he said: "I will make thee an Imam (leader) to the Nations." He pleaded: "And also (Imams) from my offspring!" He answered: "But My Promise is not within the reach of evil-doers."

[2:125] Remember We made the House a place of assembly for men and a place of safety; and take ye the Station of Ibrahim as a place of prayer; and We covenanted with Ibrahim and Isma'il, that they should sanctify My House for those who compass it round, or use it as a retreat, or bow, or prostrate themselves (therein in Prayer).

[2:126] And remember Ibrahim said: "My Lord, make this a City of Peace, and feed its People with fruits' such of them as believe in Allah and the Last Day." He said: "(Yea), and such as reject Faith, for a while will I grant them their Pleasure, but will soon drive them to the torment of Fire, an evil destination (indeed)!"

[2:127] And remember Ibrahim and Isma'il raised the foundations of the House (with this prayer): "Our Lord! Accept (this service) from us: for Thou art the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.

[2:128] "Our Lord! Make of us Muslims bowing to Thy (Will); and of our progeny a people Muslim, bowing to Thy (Will); and show us our places for the celebration of (due) rites; and turn unto us (in Mercy); for Thou art the Oft-Returning, Most Merciful.

[2:129] "Our Lord! Send amongst them a Messenger of their own, who shall rehearse Thy Signs to them and instruct them in Scripture and Wisdom, and sanctify them: for Thou art the Exalted in Might, the Wise."

[2:130] And who turns away from the religion of Ibrahim but such as debase their souls with folly? Him We chose and rendered pure in this world: and he will be in the Hereafter in the ranks of the Righteous.

[2:131] Behold! his Lord said to him: "Bow (thy will to Me):" he said: "I bow (my will) to the Lord and Cherisher of the Universe."

[2:132] And this was the Legacy that Ibrahim left to his sons, and so did Ya'qub; "O my sons! Allah hath chosen the Faith for you; then die not except in the state of submission (to Allah).

Allah tests Ibrahim (AS) and asks him to sacrifice his son.

[37:102] Then, when (the son) reached (the age of) (serious) work with him, he said: "O my son! I see in vision that I offer thee in sacrifice: now see what is thy view!" (the son) said: "O my father! do as thou art commanded: thou will find me, if Allah so wills, one practising Patience and Constancy!"

[37:103] So when they had both submitted their wills (to Allah), and he had laid him prostrate on his forehead (for sacrifice)

[37:104] We called out to him, "O Ibrahim!

[37:105] "Thou hast already fulfilled the vision!" thus indeed do We reward those who do right.

[37:106] For this was obviously a trial,

[37:107] And We ransomed him with a momentous sacrifice:

[37:108] And We left (this blessing) for him among generations (to come) in later times:

[37:109] "Peace and salutation to Ibrahim!"
