"Everything we shut our eyes to, everything we run away from, everything we deny, denigrate or despise, serves to defeat us in the end. What seems nasty, painful, evil, can become a source of beauty, joy, and strength, if faced with an open mind."

Henry Miller (1891-1980) American writer

It is the 1st point of entry into the next world. Grave is a term used to define the place of a rest of the dead human body. If a person dies in sea or is burned in ashes, still its grave will exist in a place called "Barzakh". There he/she will be questioned for his belief in Allah. A Good soul (believer) will come out victorius while the wretched soul (Disbeliever) will lose its first encounter.

Grave is also the place of the 1st punishments for ones actions as we read further.

Questions asked in the grave to Believers (Muslims)

Narated By Al-Bara' ibn Azib : We went out with the Apostle of Allah (pbuh) accompanying the bier of a man of the Ansar. When we reached his grave, it was not yet dug. So the Apostle of Allah (pbuh) sat down and we also sat down around him as if birds were over our heads. He had in his hand a stick with which he was scratching the ground.

He said Two angels will come to him, make him sit up and ask him:

1. Who is your Lord? He will reply: My Lord is Allah.
2. What is your religion? He will reply: My religion is Islam.
3. What is your opinion about the man who was sent on a mission among you? He will reply: He is the Apostle of Allah (pbuh).
4. Who made you aware of this? He will reply: I read Allah's Book, believed in it, and considered it true.

Then a crier will call from Heaven: My servant has spoken the truth, so spread a bed for him from Paradise, clothe him from Paradise, and open a door for him into Paradise. So some of its air and perfume will come to him, and a space will be made for him as far as the eye can see. (Abu Dawud 35:4735)

Allah has also announced all help for his pious servants during the question-answer session in the holy quran

[Quran 14:27] "Allah establishes those who believe with the word that stands firm in this world and the next."

Questions asked in the grave to Disbelievers (Non-Muslims)

The infidels spirit will be restored to his body, two angels will come to him, make him sit up and ask him:

1. Who is your Lord? He will reply: Alas, alas! I do not know.
2. What is your religion? He will reply: Alas, alas! I do not know.
3. Who was the man who was sent on a mission among you? He will reply: Alas, alas! I do not know.

Then a crier will call from Heaven: He has lied, so spread a bed for him from Hell, clothe him from Hell, and open for him a door into Hell. Then some of its heat and pestilential wind will come to him, and his grave will be compressed, so that his ribs will be crushed together.

One who is blind and dumb will then be placed in charge of him, having a sledge-hammer such that if a mountain were struck with it, it would become dust. He will give him a blow with it which will be heard by everything between the east and the west except by men and jinn, and he will become dust. Then his spirit will be restored to him. (Abu Dawud 35:4735)

Quran [14:27]... but Allah will leave, to stray, those who do wrong: Allah does what He wills.

Cries from the graves are heard by everyone except Humans and Genie

During the punishment of the disbelieves they will be hit with an iron hammer between his two ears, and he will cry and that cry will be heard by whatever approaches him except human beings and jinns." (Bukhari 2:23:422)

Two Persons being tortureD in the grave for Soiling with Urination & Spreading Enmity

The Prophet has warned Muslims about the consequences of Sins which are easily avoidable and does extreme harm. Below is the account of two persons undergoing punishment for 2 sins -

Narated By Ibn 'Abbas : Once the Prophet, while passing through one of the grave-yards of Medina or Mecca heard the voices of two persons who were being tortured in their graves. The Prophet said, "These two persons are being tortured not for a major sin (to avoid)." The Prophet then added, "Yes! (they are being tortured for a major sin). Indeed, one of them never saved himself from being soiled with his urine while the other used to go about with calumnies (to make enmiy between friends). The Prophet then asked for a green leaf of a date-palm tree, broke it into two pieces and put one on each grave. On being asked why he had done so, he replied, "I hope that their torture might be lessened, till these get dried." (Bukhari 1:4:215)

Worshipping the graves of Humans

Human being has always been blindfolded by shaitan whenver they wandered from the true path and taken up helpers/protectors besides Allah. It is for this reason many turn to worship humans instead of Allah.

The worst cases are that many started worshipping their own Prophets after their death !!

Narated By 'Aisha : Um Habiba and Um Salama mentioned about a church they had seen in Ethiopia in which there were pictures. They told the Prophet about it, on which he said, "If any religious man dies amongst those people they would build a place of worship at his grave and make these pictures in it. They will be the worst creature in the sight of Allah on the Day of Resurrection." (Bukhari 1:8:419)

Narated By Abu Huraira : Allah's Apostle said, "May Allah's curse be on the Jews for they built the places of worship at the graves of their Prophets." (Bukhari 1:8:428)

Body of a Martyr remains intact even after 6 months

Martyrs are given special privilages in Islam because they leave all they have in the world for the sake of Allah and fight in his cause and dare to throw themselves into the Jaws of death with vigour and might.

There has been several accounts of archaelogists that during their excavations they have found many bodies unconsumed and intact although they had seemed to be buried for long.

Narated By Jabir : When the time of the Battle of Uhud approached, my father called me at night and said, "I think that I will be the first amongst the companions of the Prophet to be martyred. I do not leave anyone after me dearer to me than you, except Allah's Apostle's soul and I owe some debt and you should repay it and treat your sisters favourably (nicely and politely)." So in the morning he was the first to be martyred and was buried along with another (martyr). I did not like to leave him with the other (martyr) so I took him out of the grave after six months of his burial and he was in the same condition as he was on the day of burial, except a slight change near his ear. (Bukhari 2:23:434)

Dua (supplication) seeking refuge from the Punishment of the Grave

The Prophet Muhammed (SAW) has urged everyone to seek refuge from the punishment in the grave (alongwith other afflictions) in one's duas (supplications)

Narated By Anas bin Malik : The Prophet used to say, "O Allah! I seek refuge with You from helplessness, laziness, cowardice and feeble old age; I seek refuge with You from afflictions of life and death and seek refuge with You from the punishment in the grave." ( Bukhari 4:52:77)

Ameen !

Sinners body thrown out of the Grave

A true story of a christian who reverted to Islam and then again converted to christianity and spread lies about Prophet Muhammed, was thrown out from his grave. Although the people tried hard to bury him, but everytime his body was thrown out.

The earth refused to accomodate him and his body was finally left over-ground.

Narated By Anas : There was a Christian who embraced Islam and read Surat-al-Baqara and Al-Imran, and he used to write (the revelations) for the Prophet. Later on he returned to Christianity again and he used to say: "Muhammad knows nothing but what I have written for him." Then Allah caused him to die, and the people buried him, but in the morning they saw that the earth had thrown his body out. They said, "This is the act of Muhammad and his companions. They dug the grave of our companion and took his body out of it because he had run away from them." They again dug the grave deeply for him, but in the morning they again saw that the earth had thrown his body out. They said, "This is an act of Muhammad and his companions. They dug the grave of our companion and threw his body outside it, for he had run away from them." They dug the grave for him as deep as they could, but in the morning they again saw that the earth had thrown his body out. So they believed that what had befallen him was not done by human beings and had to leave him thrown (on the ground). (Bukhari 4:56:814)

Muslims are ordered not to supplicate or stand at Disbelievers Graves

Allah orders Muslims in the Holy Quran to keep away from praying for disbelievers and standing away from their graves as they had died in disbelief which is perverse rebellion.

Quran [9:84] Nor do thou ever pray for any of them that dies, nor stand at his grave; for they rejected Allah and His Messenger, and died in a state of perverse rebellion.

People would wish to die rather than being alive due to afflictions

This is a Prophecy by Prophet Muhammed that a time will come when a person will pass by a grave and would wish that he be in that place of the dead due to extreme circumstances.

Narated By Abu Huraira : The Prophet said, "The Hour will not be established till a man passes by a grave of somebody and says, 'Would that I were in his place.'" ( Bukhari 9:88:231)

Martyr's deeds keep on increasing even after death

Narated By Fadalah ibn Ubayd : The Prophet (pbuh) said: Everyone who dies will have fully complete his action, except one who is on the frontier (in Allah's path), for his deeds will be made to go on increasing till the Day of Resurrection, and he will be safe from the trial in the grave. (Abu Dawud 8:2494)

What to say when placing the dead in the grave

Narated By Abdullah ibn Umar : When the Prophet (pbuh) placed the dead in the grave, he said: In the name of Allah, and following the Sunnah of the Apostle of Allah (pbuh). (Abu Dawud 14:3207)

Shoes should not be worn in graveyard

The Apostle of Allah (pbuh) suddenly saw a man walking in shoes between the graves. He said: O man, wearing the shoes! Woe to
thee! Take off thy shoes. So the man looked (round), When he recognized the Apostle of Allah (pbuh), he took them off and
threw them away. (Abu Dawud 14:3224)

Prohibition on women on visiting graves

Narated By Abdullah ibn Abbas : The Apostle of Allah (pbuh) cursed women who visit graves, those who built mosques over them and erected lamps (there). (Abu Dawud 14:3230)
