12. Prophet Ayub (AS)

A classical example in history he suffered afflictions with great patience and was always thankful to Allah (God) even though he lost all his power and glory. After his test was over Allah (God) restored his lost wealth and glory. Prophet Ayub was also an appointed prophet and messenger of Allah (God). The quran gives a glimpse of his story by the following verses.

Ayub Declared a Prophet

Quran [4:163] We have sent thee inspiration, as We sent it to Nuh and the Messengers after him: We sent inspiration to Ibrahim, Isma'il, Ishaq, Ya'qub, and the Tribes, to 'Isa, Ayub, Yunus, Harun, and Sulaiman, and to Dawud We gave the Psalms.

Ayub is guided from Allah (God)

Quran [6:84] We gave him Ishaq and Ya'qub: all (three) We guided: and before him, We guided Nuh, and among his progeny, Dawud, Sulaiman, Ayyub, Yusuf, Musa and Harun: thus do We reward those who do good:

Prophet Ayub had abundance of wealth. His initial days were of comfort and luxury. But his wealth did not mend him into sinning. He was an upright person dedicated to Allah (God) and his commandments. He would carry out all the obligations carefully and was known to be the best person of his time. He was steadfast in prayer and was humble in his dealings.

Extremely Jealous, Shaitan put all is strength to deviate Ayub from his path. Ayub lost his wealth and children in the first place. Seeing him still steadfast in his worship shaitan further exerted and inflicted Ayub with disease. The disease was such that Ayub lost the company of friends and relatives and was left lonely, unattended and unwanted. The pain of infliction however could not stop Ayub. Still Ayub remembered Allah (God) with full confidence and trust.

The Holy Quran records.

Quran [38:41] Commemorate Our Servant Ayub. Behold he cried to his Lord: "The Evil One has afflicted me with distress and suffering!"

Quran [21:83] And (remember) Ayub, when he cried to his Lord, "Truly distress has seized me, But Thou art the Most Merciful of those that are Merciful."

[21:84] So We listened to him: We removed the distress that was on him, and We restored his people to him, and doubled their number, as a Grace from Ourselves, and a thing for commemoration, for all who serve Us.

The ever Mercifull Allah (God) then invented ways to heal Ayub of his disease. Water emerged from nowhere when Ayub striked his foot. This water healed all his disease and restored his health to the surprise of many.

[38:42] (The command was given:) "Strike with thy foot: here is (water) wherein to wash, cool and refreshing and (water) to drink."

After restoring his health Allah (God) multiplied his provisions to double than what he possesed before and he again was blessed with children and comfort.

[38:43] And We gave him (back) his people, and doubled their number, as a Grace from Ourselves, and a thing for commemoration, for all who have Understanding.

During the time of his illness, Ayub got angry at his wife due to her objectionable behaviour. Ayub took an oath that he would lash her if he got well. Later on when the time approached for fulfilling his oath, Ayub was hesistance as this was not a kind gesture and such thing did not suite his nature. Allah(God) helped him carry out his oath in a most decent manner.

[38:44] "And take in thy hand a little grass, and strike therewith: and break not (thy oath)." Truly We found him full of patience and constancy, how excellent in Our service! ever did he turn (to Us)!

Prophet Muhammad's (SAW) Account About Ayub recorded in Sahih Bukhari :-

Abu Hurairah (RA) narrated that the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said: "While Ayub was taking a bath, a swarm of gold locusts fell on him, and he started collecting them in his garment. Allah (God) called him: '0 Ayub! Have I not made you too rich to need what you see?' He said: 'Yes, 0 Lord! But I cannot shun Your Blessings."
